Where does brand protection start?

Brand protection starts with visibility rather than an incident: first seeing, then telling apart, and only then acting on a documented record.

Brand protection usually starts with an incident: a complaint, a customs notice, a social media post. The response at that point is fast but scattered, because there is no picture showing what you are actually dealing with.

Visibility first

The first step is not protecting but seeing. Without knowing which channels your product passes through, which listings your brand appears in and where each batch went, there is no way to decide which measure will help.

Then the ability to tell products apart

Seeing is not enough; you have to be able to separate your product from one that is not yours. That comes from an invisible signature embedded in the packaging or from a record at unit level. Once the distinction is clear, the argument gets shorter.

Enforcement last

Takedown requests, customs applications and legal proceedings only produce results when you hold a documented record. The process does not close by sending a request; it closes by following the outcome.

You cannot protect what you cannot see, and you cannot defend what you cannot tell apart.

To talk about where to start, it is enough to describe your product group and the point that gives you the most trouble today.

The first step is an inventory

Brand protection does not start with choosing a technology; it starts with writing down what is to be protected. Which products, in which markets, in which packaging — every decision made before that list exists leaves part of the list outside.

Once the list is there, priority follows by itself: the product that is counterfeited most, the product with the highest margin and the regulated product. If those are not the same product, protection is built in sequence rather than everywhere at once.

Where are you losing?

Counterfeiting does not come from one place. Packaging can be copied, a genuine label can be stuck on a counterfeit product, and a genuine product can reach a market it was never meant for. These are three different problems that call for three different measures; when a single solution is sought under the heading of "brand protection", two of them stay uncovered.

A method chosen before the list of what needs protecting exists leaves part of that list outside from the start.
